I opened my coat and uncoiled the rope wound around my waist. It

had accompanied me on all my nightly excursions. Luckily it was

neither very long, nor very heavy. I slipped around the front of the

ladder, which the thieves had thoughtfully positioned in the shadows, and

fastened one end of the rope around the bottom rung. After testing its

security, I stepped back several paces and, holding the other end, I pulled as hard as I could.

I surprised myself by my own strength, or perhaps it was the frosty

ground which aided my success. Either way the bottom of the ladder

slid towards me so rapidly that I found myself running backwards to avoid its collapse. It toppled almost silently, except when it hit the gravel. In any other circumstances this would have gone unnoticed, but in that stillness you could hear the proverbial pin drop. Much less an aluminium ladder on stone.
